Dental Veneers in North Austin
What Are They?
Veneers are wafer-thin layers of porcelain that form a shell over the front of the tooth. They can improve the look of teeth by changing the shape, color, and outline of the tooth.
Brian F. Scaff DDS uses porcelain veneers in our practice because they resist stain best and look most natural. Patients have a choice of traditional or prepless veneers.
What Types of Problems Do Dental Veneers Fix?
Here are some of the issues that veneers can address:
- Discoloration from root canal treatment or excessive fluoride
- Stains from tetracycline or other drugs
- Large resin fillings
- Worn down, chipped, or broken teeth
- Misalignment, uneven or irregularly shaped teeth
- Gaps between teeth (to close the space)
Why Choose Veneers?
The process of getting veneers is fairly simple. A first consultation encourages discussion between a patient’s goals and desired look. The dentist will examine their teeth to decide if veneers are the correct treatment. He’ll then explain the procedure and what it can or cannot do. Here, patients are always the decision-maker when it comes to their smile.
Prepless veneers are a good choice for those who aren’t ready to make permanent changes to their teeth. They can be reversed if other procedures, such as orthodontics, are necessary in the future. Traditional veneers are permanent; changes made to the teeth cannot be undone.
What to Expect
If a patient has decided on traditional veneers, preparation can begin. This involves reshaping the surface of the tooth. Impressions of the teeth will be taken, and the model is sent to the dental laboratory to process. Processing usually takes 2-4 weeks. When the veneers arrive, Dr. Scaff will prepare the tooth and trim the veneer to fit before bonding.
How Long Do They Last?
Veneers are very durable, lasting up to 15 years. They don’t require any special care; follow good oral hygiene practice, brushing, flossing, and using an antiseptic mouthwash, as normal. A beautiful new smile can last for many years!
