TMJ in North Austin

woman holding jaw in painEver noticed a clicking in the jaw when it’s opened or closed? Is it painful upon waking up in the morning? It could be a result of TMJ.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD, or “TMJ” for short) is a condition that involves the function of the primary jaw joint.

Symptoms often include:

  • Popping, clicking, or locking of the jaw
  • Headaches
  • Muscle pain
  • Abnormal tooth wear
If an abnormality is present in the jaw or the bite of the teeth, it can cause symptoms of TMJ disorder to develop.

How is TMJ Treated?

First, Dr. Scaff will assess the function of the temporomandibular joint during an exam to determine whether or not it is functioning properly. Several types of TMJ disorders can be addressed through non-surgical methods, such as bite splint therapy or orthodontics.
